Dear Families,

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with your child.   To help us get off to a smooth start, I want to share some information about questions that are frequently asked at the beginning of the school year.   Our class this year has 17 students. There will be 10 boys and 7 girls.

Specials Schedule (Daily from 1:30-2:15)

Monday            Gym

Tuesday            Art

Wednesday       (Changes each week)

Thursday           Music

Friday               Library

Recess & Lunch

We will have one ˝ hour recess every day from 11:30 - 12:00.   Lunch follows from 12:00 - 12:25.   The lunch price changed to $2.50 and just a drink costs $.35.   Breakfast costs $2.00.   The lunch menu is available on the school website each month at http://www.hrhs.net/content/norris/lunchmenu.pdf.

Snack

We will have a brief 10 minute snack break each morning at 10:30.   Please send a simple, healthy snack for your child (piece of fruit, granola bar, crackers, etc.).   Just a reminder that we are a peanut-free school, so please make sure you check labels before you send a snack with your child.

Supplies

We have limited storage space.   Please limit your student's school supplies to the list I sent home in June.   You can check our class page on the school website or call the office if you have lost your list.

Toys

I know that toys are an important part of children's lives.   Children will occasionally want to bring a toy to play with at recess.   However, we also want to encourage them to use recess time for physical activity.   Our school is fortunate to have a beautiful play structure, plenty of swings, and great playing fields.   Recess is a great time for burning off some energy and playing with friends.

We will expect children who do bring a toy to school to keep it in their back pack until recess time and return it to their back pack immediately following recess.   This will prevent toys from interfering with classroom instruction, as mentioned in the school handbook.

There will be several opportunities throughout the year for students to share a special toy during classroom share times.

Starting and Dismissal Times

The school day officially begins at 8:50.   However, students who take the bus to school come in to the classroom at 8:40.   I use that time to get ready to start the day (organizing materials, using the boys’ and girls’ rooms, unpacking back packs, etc).   If you drive your student to school, it would be helpful if he/she could arrive as close to 8:40 as possible.

Dismissal is at 3:10.   I would like to remind you that students need a note each time there is a change to their usual means of transportation.   For example, if a student gets picked up every Wednesday and you want him/her to take the bus instead, you will need to send a note giving us permission to do so.

Birthdays

Birthdays are a very special time in a child's life.   If you would like to send in a special peanut-free snack for the class on that day, please feel free to do so.   This year I am asking that you send in individually wrapped snacks for the children to enjoy at home.  We will not be able to have birthday treats in the classroom but we will still make your child's day a special one. There will be not exceptions to this.   I would like to remind everyone of the school policy concerning party invitations.   If your child does not have invitations for the whole class, they should not be passed out in school.   This helps to avoid any hurt feelings.

Homework

Homework is basically the same each week.   Every second grader should be reading 20-30 minutes each night.   Every Monday your student will get a spelling packet with one page to do each night.   This packet is due on Friday.   Math homework will also be a practice packet due on Friday as well.   Part of the homework is to bring their folders back to school each and every day.

All about Me is a special bulletin board which features one student a week.   Special instructions will be sent home on Friday when they are to be featured that following Monday.   I usually like to have lunch with my students one day during the week that they are featured.

If you have any other questions about the school, in general, you can go to the school website http://wmnorris.com/ .  The school handbook can be found online.

If at any point you have questions you can contact me at the school 527-0811 or at home 568-6598.   My school email is bking@hr-k12.org if you have a question that does not need immediate response.

I look forward to working with you this year.
