Kindergarten News
December 2010
Dear Parents,
Is it the end of the year already? This kindergarten class has been working hard and getting quite a bit done. We are all VERY excited about the holidays and vacation. Thank you to those of you who came in to share about your family’s holiday traditions. The class also shared about their favorite things to do at the holidays.
We have been working on patterns in math. The class has used a variety of materials to create them. We have also done some other activities that involve patterns. We are getting very good at finding them and creating some are complex. The class continues to work on number writing, counting (by ones and tens), and using the calendar. They are all very interested in when their birthdays are.
We understand how important birthdays are, and we know that there are many coming up. You are more than welcome to send in a special snack for your child’s birthday but please remember to follow the peanut free guidelines (we’ve included an extra one just in case). Thank you for your cooperation because we also understand how important it is to keep our children safe and healthy.
We have started to have reading groups in kindergarten. This is a time for the class to read independently and go to smaller reading groups. These groups are used for comprehension, sight word work, vocabulary, and teaching other reading strategies. We also continue to work on letter recognition and sounds. We have also written our first poems!
Announcements and Events:
CANS! CANS! CANS!- Westhampton Elementary School wants cans! The kindergarten has been doing an outstanding job collecting cans for the food drive. We are currently up to 82 cans (that is incredible for 13 students and 2 teachers). Our personal goal is 100 cans and we are not concerned about winning extra recess, just feeding others who don’t have any. We will reward the class with extra recess anyway! THANKS SO MUCH TO ALL who have donated. The drive continues until Wed., Dec. 22.
Fri. 12/17- Report cards go home
Mon. 12/20- Officer Phil comes in to talk to the
students about safety and stranger danger.
Thurs. 12/23- Common Area- Kindergarten is not
hosting, but all are invited to attend.
8:45 a.m.
Fri. 12/24- Sun. 1/2/2011- VACATION (school
resumes Mon. 1/3/2011)
*** We will be going out for recess in the snow and cold temperatures, sometimes it works well if the children have extra mittens and socks. When there is a lot of snow the kindergarten will stay in for morning recess. It takes a long time to get ready and all of their things will stay dry for lunch recess. Thank You!
**** Snacks- We are running low on snacks. If you have not sent in snacks for the month, we would appreciate it.
Warmest Holiday Greetings
and enjoy the vacation!
Jenn and Kelly
