Solving Equations and Inequalities
One Variable with:
distributive property,
variables on both sides,
fractional coefficients,
variables in the denominator, and
proportions.
Solving Quadratics using a square root, if possible, by factoring or by using the quadratic formula.
Systems of equations with 2 variables:
By Graphing, Linear Combination (add the equations) and
Substitution

Linear Relationships:
Two sets of data have a linear relationship if there is a constant rate of change between two sets of data.
The solution set for the relationship is graphed as a line and the rate of change shows up as the slope of the line.
The formula for slope is:
m =
Two common forms of equations for linear relationships are:
y –
y1 = m (x – x1) and
Y =
mx + b
Quadratic Relationships:
Two sets of data have a quadratic relationship if the independent variable (usually x) is squared.
There is not a constant rate of change.
The solution set for the relationship is graphed as a parabola.
The rate of changes
changes from positive to negative or negative to positive depending upon if the parabola is concave up or concave down.
The equation of a quadratic relationship is usually written in the form:
Y = Ax2 +
Bx + C
Exponential Relationships:
Two sets of data have an exponential relationship if there is one constant value that is repeatedly multiplied to find the dependent variable (y).
The equation is in the basic form:
Y = Ax
There is a “bottom” or a “top” to the range of the data depending upon if the relationship is exponential decay or growth.
There is not a constant rate of change.
Instead the rate of changes increases.
Square Root Relationships have a radical of the independent variable.
The
solutions set has a limited domain and a limited range.
The basic form of the equation is:
y =
+ B
